Knights Edge Oles
November 12, 2001
The St. Olaf and Carleton wrestling teams initiated their seasons Saturday, November 10, with a close duel meet that was decided in the very last match. The lead changed hands several times throughout the duel, but the Carleton Knights came up victors 27-25.
The Oles came out of the gate quickly with Gabe Koepp (FY, Rush City, Minn.) providing a dominating 8-0 major decision in the125 lb. weight class, but Carleton's 133 pounder, Gates Sanford, quickly countered with a first period pin against St. Olaf's Trevor Lund (So, Hastings, Minn.). In the 141 lb. match St. Olaf's Luke Knadle (So, Lacrosse, Wis.) controlled the match until Carleton's Tim Thurston scored a last second takedown to take the match 7-5. Despite third period comeback, Carleton's Matt Ernie came up just a little short of defeating St. Olaf's Anthony Rogers (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) 10-8.
When the 157 lb. match started the Knights had a slim 9-7 lead over the Oles. In the157 lb. match, Carleton's David Jackson avoided a near takedown and controlled the match resulting in a second period pin versus St. Olaf's Eric Mull (Sr, Sparta, Wis.). At 165 lbs., St. Olaf answered back when Jay DeCoux (FY, Faribault, Minn.) pinned Frank Brodie in the first period. At 174 lbs. St. Olaf's Kevin DeCoux (FY, Faribault, Minn.) and Carleton's Joel Stark engaged in a hard-fought competition before Stark corralled DeCoux for a first-period pin.
Entering the 184 lb. match the score was Carleton 21, St. Olaf 13, but that was soon to change. The Oles' Will Palmieri (Jr, Neosho, Mo.) struck with the day's fastest fall, 1:21, narrowing the gap to 21-19. The Oles capitalized on a forfeit at 197 lbs to take the lead 25-21. The Oles bumped 184 lb. Shad Bauer up to face Carleton's 232 lb. Dakota Brown for the last match of the day. The weight ended up being too much for Bauer though, as Brown finished the meet with a first period fall.
