Ole women qualify for Nationals with 4th place finish at Regions
November 12, 2001
The St. Olaf women?s cross country team is once again taking the energy and excitement of the season and will be traveling to the NCAA Division III Championships in Rock Island, Illinois.
Finishing fourth out of twenty-two teams, the St. Olaf women compiled 147 points, only 30 points behind Luther?s third place finish. The Oles were lead by junior, Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) who finished a strong second with a time of 17:52 on the 5,000-meter course. Teammate Brigid Franey (Sr., Lexington, KY) finished seventh to help establish the strong finish for the Oles. The Oles proved that they were worthy of the chance to race at the NCAA National Championship Meet.
Using Daymont?s strong second place finish to defending champion Johanna Olson and Franey?s tough seventh place finish, the remaining Oles would not allow sickness or pain to hold them back. The tight pack running of the other runners elevated St. Olaf into the top four and qualified them for nationals. Sonja Bostrom (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) finished in 26th place and was closely followed by Kjersten Johnson (So., Stevens Point, Wis.) who crossed the line in 53rd place. Close behind Johnson was Marit Grorud (So., Fremont, Neb.) in 59th place, while Kate Boeding (Sr., Potsville, Iowa) and Britt Carlson (So., Stillwater, Minn.) completed the Ole pack.
The strength of the Oles came alive in their fight within the Central region for a place at the NCAA Championship Meet. Be assured that the Oles will once again dig deep and find strength from within and from their teammates next weekend as they race in Rock Island, Illinois, at Augustana College at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 17.
