Womens hockey split games with UW-Eau Claire
November 12, 2001
On Friday, November 9, the Oles won their home opener against the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds. Their first win of the season came as a result of extremely hard work and tough play by all. Stand outs in this matchup for the Oles were Kayla Wente (FY, Waterloo, Iowa) and Andrea Smith (FY, Burnsville, Minn.). Wente scored the game-winning and only goal of the game in the second period at 7:13 with an assist from Lorna Wilson (FY, Wasilla, Alaska). With the final score of 1-0, Smith was awarded a shutout, stopping all of the Blugold's 47 shots on goal.
Saturday, November 10, the Oles faced the Blugolds again for the fourth time. Unfortunately, the Oles could not pull off another win. The Oles scored their first goal of the game in the first period on a power play. First-year, Kate Barnett (Burnsville, Minn.) scored at the 17:00 mark for the Oles with assists from Nadia Nickerson (Sr. Powell, Wyo.) and Sarah Ray (So. St. Paul, Minn.). However, the Blugolds answered back with a goal of their own. In the second period, Barnett scored again, this time unassisted, at the 1:53 mark but unfortunately, with a final score of 2-5, the Oles were defeated. The Oles were outshot 36-13.
Next week the Oles face the Hamline Pipers in St. Paul at the Coliseum at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 14. On Saturday, November 20, the Oles return home again to face Chatham College at 7:30 PM.
