The St. Olaf men?s hockey team gained a split with the Hamline Pipers this weekend, losing by a score of 6-4 on November 9 in St. Paul but rebounding with a 7-3 win in Northfield on November 10.

Friday night?s game started out slowly for the Oles. Ryan Manke scored 5:23 into the first period to give the Pipers a 1-0 lead. Jason BreMiller (Jr, Millbrook, NY) scored his third goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at the 12:38 mark of the first period. Hamline?s Mike Johnson would give the Pipers a 2-1 lead at the 14:11 mark, but St. Olaf?s Dan Norsten (So, Eagan, Minn.) scored on the power play with 2:32 remaining in the period to tie the score at 2-2 after one period. BreMiller added his second goal of the game and fourth of the season just 3:55 into the second period, but that?s the only lead the Oles would see for the rest of the night. B.J. Anderson and Lubos Taragel would add goals in the second period to give the Pipers a 4-3 lead after two periods. Jeff Crouse would add a power play goal just 18 seconds into the third period to give the Pipers a 5-3 lead. Keith Townsend (FY, Sterling Heights, Mich.) would score his first collegiate goal with 2:44 remaining in the game to cut the lead to 5-4. With an extra attacker on the ice, Brice Parks added an empty net goal with six seconds remaining to give the Pipers a 6-4 victory. Goaltender Jake Bullard (Jr, Bloomington, Minn.) stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss for the Oles while the tandem of Rob Fuchs and John Harstad stopped 34 of 38 shots for the Pipers.

The second game of the weekend proved to be a much different story as St. Olaf jumped on the Pipers early. Brandon Smieja (Sr, Lakeville, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season at the 6:47 mark to give the Oles a 1-0 lead. BreMiller added his fifth of the season on the power play at 12:18 to increase the lead to 2-0. David Short (FY, Anchorage, AK) scored his first collegiate goal at the 14:06 mark of the first and the Oles were rolling. Jordan Bronce (Jr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) also added his first of the season at 18:51 of the first and the Oles took a 4-0 lead into the locker room. Hamline came back in the second period with goals by Parks and Taragel to cut the lead to 4-2, but Townsend responded with his second goal of the weekend at the 9:22 mark to give the Oles a 5-2 lead. Brendan Roache would score at 12:42 of the second to cut the lead to 5-3, but that?s as close as the Pipers would get. Nick Hanson (Jr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) would add two power play goals in the third period to give the Oles a 7-3. Goaltender Garret Hasti (So, St. Louis Park, Minn.) stopped 38 of 41 shots in the win for the Oles. Forward Justin Bronce (Sr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) also had a superb game for the Oles, tallying four assists in the victory.

After the weekend series, the Oles improve to 1-2-1 (1-2-1 MIAC) while the Pipers fall to 1-3 (1-3 MIAC). Up next for the Oles is a two game non-conference series against St. Norbert?s College at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 16 and against Lake Forest College at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 17. Both games are at the Northfield Ice Arena.
