Womens cross-country compete at Nationals
November 19, 2001
The St. Olaf women?s cross-country team cruised to a 22nd place finish this past weekend at the NCAA Championship Meet in Rock Island, Illinois. The Ole women entered the race seeded 22nd, proving that the caliber of this team matched their own expectations but did surprised many others in reaching this race.
Junior co-captain, Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) finished the course in 18:06 in 46th place. Teammate and co-captain, Brigid Franey finished close behind Daymont and received 68th place with a time of 18:30. The strong pack running of Daymont and Franey encouraged the other Ole runners to race well; most of who found personal bests on the Championship course. The second tight Ole pack was lead by Sonja Bostrom (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) with Kjersten Johnson (So., Stevens Point, Wis.) and Marit Grorud (So., Fremont, Nebr.) close behind. Each runner finished within a minute of each other, finishing 133, 139, and 147 respectively. The remaining two Ole runners, Britt Carlson (So.,Stillwater, Minn.) and Rachel Pederson (Jr., Sioux Falls, SD) finished in 164 and 166 place.
Regardless of the final placing that the Oles received, the effort and progress made throughout the season to reach nationals became a first place effort! The Oles drew upon the strength, determination, pride, and tradition of the team to perform admirably at nationals.
