Ole Men drop opening game at Capital

Tony Ruberg and Geron Tate scored 15 points each, leading Capital University to a 77-61 win over St. Olaf in the opening round of the Lutheran Brotherhood Capital Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Capital out-shot and out-rebounded the Oles in the first game for both teams. The Crusaders had 41 rebounds to St. Olaf's 28. Capital made 53% from the field, including five-of-nine from three point, while the Oles shot just 31%.

The Oles cut the lead to eight in the early minutes of the second half, and had three chances to cut the lead further, but could not capitalize. The Crusaders led 38-26 at halftime. Mike Ludwig (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) scored 20 points for St. Olaf, but was a dismal 6-20 from the field. First-year Ted Gonsoir (Centennial, Minn.) added ten points, and Tim Nelson (Jr.,Braham, Minn.) nine in the loss. Capital's Tyler Schelich and Chuck Bihn added 13 and ten points in the win. The Oles played much of the game without Matt Schlenker (So. Rochester, Minn.), Tim Nelson (Jr., Braham, Minn.) and Justin Bonestroo (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.), who each fouled out with more than ten minutes to play in the game. There were 59 fouls called in the game, and each team went to the line 34 times.

Capital plays Texas Lutheran in the Championship at 9:00 PM and St. Olaf plays Thiel College of Pennsylvania in the third place game at 4:00 PM.

After the third place game at the Capital Classic, St. Olaf plays again next Tuesday, November 20, at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa at 7:00 PM. Monday, November 26, the Oles host Northwestern College in their home opener.
