The St. Olaf women?s basketball team lost to Simpson College in their home opener on Tuesday, November 20, dropping to a 1-1 record in non-conference play. The Oles, trailing by seven at the half, made several runs at the Storm during the contest, often getting within two possessions of the tie or lead. Coach Buresh remarked, "We had opportunities in the second half to beat a nationally ranked team." Simpson, ranked fourth in the nation in the preseason polls, never quite let up though, and the Oles lost the game by a score of 72-83. Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) was the leading scorer for the Oles with a career high 21 points, going five for six from the line and hitting four-three pointers. Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) scored ten for St. Olaf, and Lori Enlund (So, Bloomington, Ill.) added eight. Carrie Cooley (Sr, Villard, Minn.) set the pace in other statistical areas, dishing out four assists and collecting seven boards.

Neither team shot particularly well, but Simpson shot 41 percent from the field in comparison to St. Olaf?s 33 percent. In addition, Simpson?s up-tempo, aggressive defense put tough pressure on the Ole offense causing them to commit 27 turnovers. Coach Buresh explained, "Defensively we played well, but we struggled offensively. Turnovers and free throws kept us from coming out on top."

The Oles will next take on the Norse of Luther College at home at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 24.
