November 21, 2001
On Saturday, November 17, the Oles defeated the Chatham College Cougars 9-1 at the Northfield Ice Arena.
The Oles dominated this first non-conference match up with the Cougars. The first goal of the night was on a power play, scored by captain Nadia Nickerson (Sr, Powell, Wyo.), with the assist from Kate Barnett (FY, Burnsville, Minn.). Sarah Ray (So, St. Paul, Minn.) scored four goals during this game, two of which were back to back in the first period. The first of her goals was short-handed and assisted by Sarah Johnson (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Barnett. Ray?s second goal was assisted by Erin Baxter (FY, Rosemount, Minn.). Late in the first period, the Oles scored their fourth goal of the game. This goal was Jenny Groth?s (FY, Waupaca, Wis.) first goal of the season and was assisted by Brit Schultheis (FY, Shoreview, Minn.) and Kayla Wente (FY, Waterloo, Iowa). In the second period, the Oles knocked three more pucks into the net. The first goal of the second period and her first of the season was scored by Anne Whipple (Jr, Neenah, Wis.) with the assists from Amy Wysocki (Jr, Lakeland, Mich.) and Wente. Late in the second period Groth scored again on a power play with a great tip in off of a shot from the point by captain Megan Duffey (Sr, Richfield, Minn.). The assist went to Lorna Wilson (FY, Wasilla, Ala.). Within thirty seconds Ray had another goal, this one was unassisted. However, the Cougars answered back this time late into the second period and scored what turned out to be their only goal of the game.
Midway through the third period, Ray scored her fourth goal of the game with the assist from Barnett. Then Barnett scored herself, with the assists from Ray and Baxter. Goaltender Kerry Rollwagen (FY, Mendota Heights, Minn.) was very much a part of the action as well, stopping 27 of the Cougar?s 28 shots on goal. The Oles had 32 shots on goal.
The Oles next match up is a home conference game against the Hamline Pipers at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, November 20, at the Northfield Ice Arena.
