The St. Olaf men?s hockey team faced off against St. Norbert?s College and Lake Forest College on November 16-17 in the first of three series versus schools from the NCHA. The Oles lost 5-1 on Friday night to number two nationally ranked St. Norbert?s, but rallied for a 6-2 victory on Saturday afternoon versus Lake Forest.

Friday night?s game started out well for the Oles. Although the Oles were playing a team with a significant size and age difference, the Oles held up well. St. Norbert?s got on the board early with a goal by Faron Duthie at 5:22 of the first period. Mike Costly scored at 17:35 to give the Green Knights a 2-0 lead, but the Oles came back with a goal by Justin Bronce (Sr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) at the 18:31 mark to cut the lead to 2-1 after one period of play. Unfortunately, this was as close as the game would get. The size and strength advantage of the Green Knights took over in the second period as Chris Bodnar, Eric Smith, and Marc Collins all added goals to give the Green Knights an insurmountable 5-1 lead. Although there was no scoring in the third period, the Oles still continued to be overmatched by the Green Knights. Garret Hasti (So, St. Louis Park, Minn.) played absolutely outstanding for the Oles, stopping 68 of 73 shots in the loss for the Oles while Chancey Colquhoun stopped 14 of 15 shots in the win for the Green Knights.

Saturday afternoon?s game had a much different complexion to it. The Oles jumped out on the Foresters early. Jordon Bronce (Jr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) started out the game by finishing a pretty combination play assisted by Nick Hanson (Jr, Eden Prairie, Minn.) to give the Oles a 1-0 lead at 9:11 of the first period. Just 13 seconds later, Keith Townsend (FY, Sterling Heights, Mich.) ripped a wrist shot by the Lake Forest goalkeeper Brady Chianciola to give the Oles a 2-0 lead. Hanson would add a goal with just 15 seconds left in the period to give the Oles a 3-0 lead after one period. Lake Forest came into the second period with much more of a jump in their step and it showed. Matt Bruni added a power play goal at 8:06 of the second period to cut the lead to 3-1. Dana Quinn (FY, Madison, Wis.) powered home a shorthanded goal at 19:26 of the second period to extend the lead to 4-1, but Lake Forest?s Adrian Wong scored a power play goal at the buzzer to cut the lead to 4-2 after two periods. The third period was all St. Olaf as Hanson scored his second goal of the game at 3:43 to increase the lead to 5-2. Bronce added his second goal of the game at 6:08 to cap the scoring and the Oles held on the rest of the way for a 6-2 win. Hanson and Bronce both had four points on the afternoon, while their line mate Dan Norsten (So, Eagan, Minn.) chipped in for 3 assists. Goaltender Jake Bullard (Jr, Bloomington, Minn.) had a stellar game for the Oles, stopping 48 of 50 shots in the win while Chianciola stopped 25 of 31 in the loss for the Foresters.

St. Olaf now improves to 2-3-1 (1-2-1 MIAC) on the season. Up next for the Oles is a non-conference battle versus Northland College on Saturday, November 24 in Ashland, Wisconsin. The Oles return home at 7:00 PM on Saturday, December 1 to take on the St. Mary?s Cardinals at the Northfield Ice Arena.
