Womens Basketball crushes Hamline in first conference game
November 29, 2001
The St. Olaf women's basketball team beat the Pipers of Hamline University by a score of 78 to 51 on Wednesday, November 28. The Oles, winning their first conference contest of the season in St. Paul, showed their depth and defensive ability, controlling the game throughout.
"Our defense really dictated play in the first half, and that was the key to the game," commented Coach Buresh. "They were frustrated and unable to execute." The Oles defense was impressive, holding the Pipers to just 15 points and shooting 21 percent from the field in the first half. St. Olaf's tough defense in turn gave them momentum on the offensive end, enabling them to push the ball and run a significant amount of offensive transition. While playing at this accelerated tempo, the Oles committed only 13 turnovers in the contest, showing significant improvement in this area.
Liz Woodrow (Sr, Aitkin, Minn.) lead the Oles in scoring with 17 points, going seven for 11 from the field. Liz Mundahl (Jr, Eagan, Minn.) followed closely behind with 14 points while Sarah McBroom (So, Mora, Minn.) added 12. Back-up point guard Molly Simon (FY, Hudson, Wis.) played well for the Oles, dishing out 7 assists. The leading rebounders for the Oles were Kristy Larson (FY, St. Ansgar, IA) with ten and Jill Johnson (So, Butterfield, Minn.) with seven.
St. Olaf plays Gustavus Adolphus College at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 1 in St. Peter in another MIAC conference contest.
