Oles lose home opener 4-2
September 10, 2001
On Saturday, September 8 the St. Olaf Men?s Soccer team hosted non-conference opponent Marian College at Rolf Mellby Memorial Field. The Oles entered the contest 0-1 looking to get back on track.
In the first half the Oles started strong, holding much of the possession and striking first with a Gaute Johnsen (Jr., Akershus, Norway) goal off of a flick from Ben Clymer (Jr., Hudson, WI). Late in the half, defender Karl Wilbur (Sr., Edina, MN) was sent off for receiving his second yellow card of the game. This left the Oles playing a man down for the rest of the contest. The Oles ended up conceding a goal late in the half knotting the score at 1-1.
The Oles remained confident going into the second half. The team played hard and still controlled much of the game. The Oles struck first in the second half as midfielder Kyle Swanson (Sr., Cottage Grove, MN) beat a two Marian players and played a through ball to Clymer. Clymer slotted the ball past the Marian keeper giving the Oles a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Oles, the lead was squandered as Marian scored on a counter attack. Marian scored two additional goals to post a 4-2 victory.
The Oles are 0-2 going into their next match against the St. Olaf Alumni on Saturday, September 15 at 3:30 pm. The game will be played at Rolf Mellby Memorial Field. St. Olaf will open conference play at home at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19 against Bethel College.
