NORTHFIELD, Minn. ?Minnesota author Joan Oliver Goldsmith will read from and sign her new book How Can We Keep From Singing: Music and the Passionate Life on Tuesday, Sept. 18,, at St. Olaf College.

The reading, free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Viking Theater, Buntrock Commons. Goldsmith will sign copies of How Can We Keep From Singing after the reading.

How Can We Keep From Singing, published in August, is a celebration of the world of song. Goldsmith brings the reader inside the music she loves, to share the physical joys and agonies of making harmonious sound and the sensual pleasures of hearing it. She shares her inspirations and wisdom ? about making mistakes, about courage and difficulty, about teaching, friendship, self-knowledge and the essential elements of creativity.

Goldsmith, of Minneapolis, sings with the Minnesota Chorale, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and other orchestras, as well as maintaining a career in freelance writing.

She gives readers an inside look into the life of a singer ? long rehearsal hours, the stresses of performing and the reward of making music with others. She envelops the reader in the musical experience and encourages her audience not to hold back while playing the "invisible instrument" of the creative spirit.

St. Olaf College prepares students to become responsible citizens of the world, fostering development of mind, body and spirit. A four-year, coeducational liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), St. Olaf has a student enrollment of 2,950 and a full-time faculty complement of approximately 300. It is one of Money Guide?s top 100 "elite values in college education today," and it leads the nation?s colleges in percentage of students who study abroad.
