Oles Win First Conference Match
September 17, 2001
To start off conference play, the Oles Volleyball team met up with the Tommies in a duel for the number one seed in the MIAC. St. Thomas brought all guns firing, left, middle and right, but the Oles weren?t going to let anybody push them around in their own gym. This was a big match for both teams; the tension could be cut during the warm up before the match. The qualities that gained the Oles an upper-edge on the win were persistence and consistent hard work.
The score of the first game of the match plainly reflected the dominating forced of the Oles, 30-21. It was the Tommies who then decided to change the momentum successfully, pulling out a close win of 31-29. The consistency of the offense, the scrapiness of defense, and the incredible serving brought the Oles to a tough second game. But once again, the Oles showed grit and energy by winning the last two games, as well as the match, by 30-28 and 30-24. Not only was this an important win statistically, but it was also a great step to start the conference challenge on.
Gustavus Adolfus College is the next stop for the Oles on Wednesday, Sept. 19th, at 7:30. Homecoming weekend will bring the Cobbers and the Blazers to St. Olaf. These are home games, 7:30 on Sept. 21st and 3:00 on Sept. 22nd. Come cheer the girls on as they remain undefeated with a total record of 9-0!
