With the first tournament of the year under their belts, the St. Olaf men?s golf team traveled to St. Cloud to compete in the St. John?s Invitational. Cool but dry weather presided over day one of the tournament at Wapicada Country Club, and the same conditions continued on day two at the Monticello Golf Club.

The Oles started the tournament with an improvement from their last contest with a team total of 332. Sophomore Brandt Uthus (Minot, ND) led the Oles with an opening round of 78. Following him was senior Brian Odlaug (Maplewood, Minn.) with an 83. First year Pat Gilles (Madison, Wis.) showed promise with an impressive 85 in his first collegiate start as an Ole. Junior Erik Polzin (Bloomington, Minn.) shot an 86 and sophomore Cory Patterson (Hopkins, Minn.) shot an opening round 96.

On day two at the Monticello Golf Club, the Oles showed vast improvement with a team total of 314 and a tournament total of 646. Leading the way in round two for the Oles was Odlaug, firing a consistent 75 for a two-day total of 158. Keeping the solid play going was Uthus with a superb second round score of 77. After a tough first round, Polzin shot an impressive 79 to close out the weekend with a total of 165. Gilles kept his good play alive with a score of 83 for a tournament total of 168 in his very first collegiate tournament. Patterson came back strong after day one with a solid second round of 85 and a total of 181. The Oles seem to be improving everyday and look to peak at the MIAC championships at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Anoka, Minnesota on October 5 and 6. The Oles next contest is the Carleton Invitational starting at 9:00 am Sunday and Monday, September 23-24.
