Faculty Panel to Conduct a Teach-In Addressing the Crisis in America
September 20, 2001
All members of the college community are invited to a panel presentation and discussion on Wednesday, September 26th, from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. in the Gold and Black Ballroom on the third floor of Buntrock Commons.
The panel will consist primarily of members of the St. Olaf faculty. Two members of the Carleton College faculty have also been invited; one has been confirmed. The panelists? areas of expertise include international relations, religious studies, philosophy, ethics, economics, the Middle East, natural science, Islamic studies, and others.
The idea of the panel emerged from a series of conversations that involved students, faculty and staff regarding the need to come together as a community of learners to address the tragic events of September 11 and their aftermath, as well as to be better informed of the facts. Some of the questions suggested by faculty members are: What do our students need from faculty and advisors to help process these events? How can we be effective citizens at this time? What can we do to mitigate violence globally? There are, of course, many other questions as well as comments and all members of the college community are encouraged to attend this ?Teach-In? and address them. The complete list of faculty panelists will be available later.
Should you have any questions or recommendations, please contact the Office of Community Life and Diversity, x3334 or Laura Howting, president of the Peace and Justice student organization, x6280. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with the faculty in carrying out this event.
