St. Olaf Norseman Band, Manitou Singers, Viking Chorus to perform in

The St. Olaf College Norseman Band, Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus will make their academic-year debuts as part of the college?s Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration on Friday, Oct. 5.

The Norseman Band, Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus will perform a joint concert on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Skoglund Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Norseman Band, directed by music faculty member Paul Niemisto, is one of two symphonic bands at St. Olaf College, has developed a reputation as a dynamic and exciting concert ensemble. The band performs regularly on the Northfield campus and has toured each spring to locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Canada. The band?s membership reflects the broad spectrum of academic interests and geographical diversity of the St. Olaf student body.

The Manitou Singers, directed by music faculty member Sigrid Johnson, is one of the most popular music organizations on campus and is comprised of 100 select first-year St. Olaf women. The Manitou Singers has created a broad appeal on and off campus, with a repertoire ranging from sacred music to popular ballads.

The Viking Chorus, directed by music faculty member Robert Scholz, is a first-year all-male choir founded in 1935. In recent years the Viking Chorus has toured in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Viking Chorus also participates in many campus events, including the St. Olaf Christmas Festival, Family Weekend and chapel services.

St. Olaf College prepares students to become responsible citizens of the world, fostering development of mind, body and spirit. A four-year, coeducational liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), St. Olaf has a student enrollment of 2,950 and a full-time faculty of approximately 256. It is one of Money Guide?s top 100 "elite values in college education today," and it leads the nation?s colleges in number of students who study abroad.
