St. Olaf Mens Golf Continues Improvement at the Carleton Invite
September 25, 2001
The St. Olaf Men?s golf team improved yet again in its third tournament of the year at their home course Northfield golf club in the Carleton Invitational.
The Oles came out strong on day one of the Carleton Invitational and sat tied for second place with Gustavus with a season-low team total of 321. Because the tournament was played on the Oles? home course, they were allowed to bring ten golfers instead of the usual five. Leading the way for the Oles was senior Brian Odlaug (Maplewood, Minn.) with a very impressive 77 in tough conditions. With his 77, Brian sat just 3 shots behind the leader after the first round of play. Sophomore Brandt Uthus (Minot, ND), and First years Reid Plumbo (St. Paul, Minn.), and Pat Gilles (Madison, Wis.) played well in the wind and fired a strong 80. Rounding off the top five was Sophomore Cory Patterson (Hopkins, Minn.), who played well on the first day with a solid 83. Sophomore Charlie Eggert (Appleton, Wis.) shot an 85 on day one, junior Erik Polzin (Bloomington, Minn.) had a 91, sophomore Todd Dulin (Orono, Minn.) had a 94, sophomore Drew Beson (Neenah, Wis.) shot a 99, and senior Dave Swenson (St. Paul, Minn.) shot 103.
On day two, fighting just above freezing temperatures early in the morning, the Oles put together another strong five scores to finish in fifth with a round two total of 323. After a tough first day, Erik Polzin fired a solid 77 for a tournament total of 168. Brandt Uthus continued his strong play with a second round of 79 and a two-day total of 159. Brian Odlaug matched Uthus? tournament total of 159 with a solid 81 in the second round. Todd Dulin came back from a struggle on the first day with an 81 and a two-day total of 175. Drew Beson came back on day two to shoot a strong 83 for a total of 182. Cory Patterson and Reid Plumbo both shot 86 on day two, giving Patterson a total of 169, and Plumbo a total of 166. Pat Gilles, after a strong first round, fired a 90 for a tournament total of 170. Dave Swenson improved and shot a 92 in the second round for a total of 195. Charlie Eggert shot a 93 in the second round and finished with a total of 178.
As the conference meet gets closer, set to take place October 5 and 6 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, the Oles look to improve further in time for the most important match of the year.
