Ole Men's Tennis Upended by Gustavus
April 10, 2001
St. Olaf Men's tennis team traveled to Rochester to play a home match last Saturday, April 7th, to host the defending MIAC champion Gustavus Adolphus.Due to the unpredictable Minnesota spring weather, the match was held indoors, which did not help the Oles in their quest to knock off the defending champs.
The doubles were very competitive as the No.1 doubles of senior Pete Nau (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and junior Karl Wilbur (Edina, Minn.) lost a heartbreaker to the No.7 ranked doubles team in the nation 8-9 in a tiebreaker. The first-year twins, Ted and Tom Nagel (Oglesby, Ill.) also lost a close match losing 6-8, while No.3 doubles of junior Brandon Hall (Dubuque, Iowa) and sophomore Peder Thoen (Kolsas Norway) lost 1-8. No.4 doubles of junior Timothy Smith (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and first-year Dan Cohen (St. Paul, Minn.) also lost a competitive match 5-8.
Going up against arguably the best team in the nation this year, and last year's runner up in the national championship, the Oles competed well but also dropped some hard fought singles matches. No.1 singles Pete Nau lost, improving his play throughout the match, while No.2 Wilbur lost after a competitive first set. Peder Thoen lost at No.3, as did Hall at No.4. Ted and Tom Nagel also lost respectively at No.5 and No.6 singles. Ole first-year Dan Cohen (St. Paul, Minn.) lost while junior Timothy Smith won in a third set tie-breaker for the Oles.
The Oles lost 7-0 and fell to 10-3 on the season (3-1 in the MIAC), but look to bounce back and finish the year strong for their quest to be invited to Regionals. The Oles next match is at St. Olaf against Bethel College at 4:00 on Wednesday, April 11th.
