Hengel Leads Oles to Second Place Finish

The Ole women placed second in their home triangular meet last Thursday. The Oles garnered 127 points to St. Thomas? 157. The Knights were third with 96 points. The highlight event was the 3000 meters where three All-Americans did battle. Luther College?s JoHanna Olson, stopping by on her way home for Easter break, ran a facility record and automatic national qualifying time of 9:51.81. She was followed by St.Thomas? Kelly Faris in 10:08.97, a provisional NCAA time. The Oles? Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.), moving out of her usual distance range, was third in a personal best 10:21.58, just missing the national cut. Daymont raced the following afternoon at the Gustavus Invitational winning the 800 M in 2:16.11.

Ole senior captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) won the pole vault and bettered her NCAA qualifying mark to 11? 0 1/4". Making this feat even more impressive is that she met that mark after winning the grueling 400M hurdle race (67.69). Hengel also carried the baton for the Oles in the 400 M relay (2nd place, 52.66) and 1600 M relay teams (3rd 4:11.28).

Other Oles winning their respective events were: Becky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) in the 400 M, Lisa Eidenschink (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in the discus (124? 6") and Brigid Franey (Lexington. Ky.) in the 5000 M with a fine time of18:31.48. The 3200 M relay team of Katie Storlie (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Abby Love (Appleton, Wis.), Nicole Bergman (Norwalk, Iowa) and Megan Call (Logan, Utah) ran 10:18.93 to win the event.

The Oles host the Mantiou Track and Field Classic this Saturday, April 21. Athletes from 22 teams will compete in the largest all women?s meet in the Midwest. The field events begin at 9:30 AM and the track events at 10:00 AM.
