Oles Lose Two to Cardinals
April 22, 2001
The St.Mary's Cardinals handed the visiting Oles their first two losses of the conference season in a doubleheader played Saturday in Winona.
The start of the first game was pushed back an hour due to poor field conditions but that did not keep the Oles from jumping out to a first inning lead. The Oles scored when Steve Ryan (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a Casey Coulson (Sr., Rosemont, Minn.) sacrifice bunt. Ryan scored two batters later when Dan LaManna (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) stroked a single into center field.
The Oles held on to their 1-0 lead until the bottom of the second when Cardinal Joe Duda connected on a home run to even up the score. The Cardinals then extended their lead in the fourth, when they scored six more runs on three walks, two hits, and a catcher's interference call. The 7-1 lead proved to be too much for the Oles and the Cardinal starting pitcher allowed only one additional Ole hit as the Cardinals coasted to victory.
Erik Goodmanson (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) started on the hill for the Oles and went three and two thirds innings before leaving the game with arm troubles. Goodmanson left the game after allowing three of the five Cardinal hits and striking out four. Reid Rose (Jr., Orono, Minn.) came into the game in relief and kept the Cardinals scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.
In the second game, errors on defense provided the Cardinals with enough punch to hold on to a 2-1 victory. After the Oles failed to score a run with the bases loaded in the top of the second, the Cardinals moved ahead in the bottom of the inning when a fielding error allowed a runner to score from second base.
In the top of the fourth, however, Nick Beissel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) drove in the lone Ole run when he blasted his fifth homer of the season over the center field fence.
The game remained locked 1-1 into the sixth inning until the Cardinals received their first hit of the game on a double down the first base line. After the Oles intentionally walked the next batter to put runners on first and second with one out, a fly ball to right field gave the Cardinals an opportunity to advance the lead runner to third. Errant throws in the following play allowed the Cardinal runner to score, increasing their lead to 2-1.
Despite receiving the loss, Charlie Ruud (Fy., Cannon Falls, Minn.) allowed only one Cardinal hit in six innings of work. Leading the way on offense for the Oles were LaManna with two hits, and Beissel with a home run.
The loss moved the Oles record to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Oles will play host to the Macalester Scots at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.
