Manitou Track and Field Classic

The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team hosted the 7th annual Manitou Classic this past Saturday. Over 700 women athletes competed for 24 teams. The Oles placed 8th, with 45 points. The University of St. Thomas won the meet and Luther College placed second with 107 and 97.5 points respectively.
The Oles had a great day with many season best times and season best performances in the field events. Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) placed second in the pole vault, with a vault of 10/4". Sophomore Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) placed second in both the 1500 meter run and the 800 meter run with times of 4:45.91 and 2:17.88. Senior co-captain Anne Sateren (Minneapolis, Minn.) placed third in the competitive 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:27.75. Junior Brigid Franey (Lexington, Ky) ran a great race in the 10,000 meter run, completing the 6.2 miles in 38:49.99.
Senior Margie Tilman (St. Louis Park, Minn.), junior Tessa Pierson (Lake City, Minn.), sophomore Traci Bartz (Bemidji, Minn.) and first-year Katie Gruner (Appleton, Wis.) performed very well in a tough double of the 1500 meter run and the 800 meter run, with season best times in almost all of those races. First-year runners Abby Love (Appleton, Wis.), Marit Grorud (Freemont, Neb.), Kelly Spitzely (St. Paul, Minn.) and Becky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) had outstanding performances in their individual events. Love ran a lifetime best of 2:23.07 in the 800 meter run. Grorud ran a 1:02.80 in the 400 meter dash, a season best time. Spitzley just missed qualifying for finals in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.93 and ran a season best time of 27.33 in the 200 meter dash. Peterson ran a lifetime best in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.62 and had an oustanding performance in her first ever 400 meter hurdles finishing in 1:09.70.
The Ole athletes who competed in the field events finished well. Sophomore Lisa Eidenschink (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) placed 7th in the discus with a season best throw of 124-2. Sophomore co-captain Emily Uzzell (Norfolk, Neb.), juniors Amanda Jacobson (Iola, Wis.) and Sonja Bostrom (St. Paul, Minn.), sophomore Leah Dvorak (Elma, Iowa) and first-year Jill Johnson (Butterfield, Minn.) all had season best throws in their respective events. Junior Sarah Beggs (Klamath Falls, Ore.) and first-year Erin Davidson (St. Paul, Minn.) had good performances in the jumping events.
The Ole relay teams had a great day. The 4x100 meter relay of Peterson, Daymont, Hengel and Grorud ran a season best time by over 6 seconds, finishing in 4:05.60. All four had their best splits of the season and looked very impressive. The 4x100 meter relay team of Spitzley, Peterson, senior co-captain Sara Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) and Hengel had great hand-offs and dropped over a second off their previous best time, finishing in 5:56 seconds.
The Oles compete at the Macalester Invite this coming Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m.
