Faculty recital Saturday, April 28, will celebrate inauguration of St. Olaf President

NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? Seven St. Olaf College music faculty members will perform a special recital on Saturday, April 28, as part of the inauguration of St. Olaf President Christopher Meredith Thomforde.

The event, at 8 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music, is free and open to the public.

Music faculty members who will participate in the recital are: David Hagedorn, percussion; Martin Hodel, trumpet; Alison Feldt, soprano; Kathryn Ananda-Owens, piano; Nancy Paddleford, piano; Charles Gray, violin; and David Carter, cello.

Hagedorn will open the concert with two songs for vibraphone and marimba, "Crystal Silence/Sea Journey" by Chick Corea and "Bulgarian Rhythm" by Béla Bartok. Hodel and Ananda-Owens will follow with two movements of "Sonata for Trumpet and Piano" by Eric Ewazen.

Feldt will perform five pieces: "Spring" and "Desire in Spring" by Ivor Gurney, "Just Spring" by John Duke, "In Time of Silver Rain" by Jean Berger and "The Year?s at the Spring" by Amy Marcy Beach. Paddleford will be featured on three pieces for piano: "Remembranza (Pasillo)" by Juan de Dios Paez, "Pagina de album" by Alejandro Monestel and "Preludio y Danza de la Pena Negra" by Benjamin Gutièrrez.

The recital will conclude with the Melius Piano Trio performing "Klavier-Trio in B major, Op. 8" by Johannes Brahms.

The recital is one of many events that are part of the Christopher Thomforde inauguration. Four other concerts, two worship services, two performances of a Roman comedy, an art exhibit, a dance festival, a new historical exhibit and a gala fireworks display also will be part of the inaugural festivities Thursday through Sunday, April 26-29.

The official inauguration will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Skoglund Center Auditorium with Librarian of Congress James Billington, a personal friend of Thomforde?s, delivering the main address. Inauguration Day also will include a tree-planting ceremony, a worship service, a reception and an orchestra concert.
