Ole Baseball Sweeps Auggies
April 27, 2001
The Oles collected two wins against the Augsburg Auggies when they combined for 23 runs and 25 hits in the double-header.
The Oles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Brian Sprout (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) and Casey Coulson (Sr., Rosemont, Minn.) hit back to back doubles allowing Sprout to score. It wasn't until the fourth inning that the Oles struck again. With one out, Joe Hammond (Jr., Neillsville, Wis.) singled and moved to second when Steve Ryan (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) drew a walk. Sprout followed with a double, scoring Hammond and Ryan and later scored himself on a Coulson grounder. After adding two more in the fifth, Ryan hit his third homer of the season to tack on the final two runs.
Leading the way for the offense was Sprout with four hits and Dan LaManna (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) and Hammond with two hits each. Erik Goodmanson (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) started on the mound and picked up the win as he allowed four hits and struck out six through four innings. Reid Rose (Jr., Orono, Minn.) finished strong with two innings of work.
In the second game the Oles exploded for 14 runs on 15 hits. The Ole sticks opened the scoring in the top of the second when Kevin Quame (Jr., Benson, Minn.) scored on a Hammond RBI single. After scoring three in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth, the Oles pounded out seven more in the sixth.
Leading the way for the Oles on offense were Lars Finanger (Jr., Decorah, Iowa) with three singles, Sprout with two doubles, and Coulson and Hammond with two hits each. Charlie Ruud (FY., Cannon Falls, Minn.) went the distance for the Oles allowing eight hits and striking out nine.
With the sweep of the Auggies, the Oles improved to 19-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play. The Oles will host Luther College at 1:00 in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 29 at Mark Almli Field.
