Womens Track and Field Third at Macalester Invite
April 30, 2001
The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team competed at the Macalester Invite this past Saturday. Though strong winds were present throughout the day the Oles still competed well and many of the women had personal best performances. The Oles placed third in the team competition with 91.5 points.
Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) won the pole vault with a vault of 11'6", a personal best and a new school record. This height also qualifies Hengel automatically for the National Track Meet. Within five minutes of Hengel's qualifying mark, sophomore Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) joined her with a provisional mark in the 800 meter run. Though strong winds made the back stretch difficult, Daymont won the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.35, her second best time ever.
In the first-ever steeplechase event for women, senior Mary Reid (Cedar Falls, Iowa) placed fourth in a time of 12:23.20, establishing a new school record. Senior Margie Tilman (St. Louis Park, Minn.) won her debut 3000 meter run, (10: 52.5) with teammate junior Brigid Franey (Lexington, Ky.) close behind (11:00.0). Sophomore Leah Dvorak (Elma, Iowa) placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5'0". The 4x800 meter relay team of junior Megan Call (Logan, Utah), senior co-captain Anne Sateren (Minneapolis, Minn.), sophomores Taryn Weakly (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Dawn Mielke (Arlington, Minn.) won going away. Lisa Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) also threw well in the discus with a third place toss of 128'11".
The Oles travel to St. Tomas for the Tommie Twilight meet on Wednesday, May 2 and go back to Macalester College on Friday, May 4 for the final tune-up before the MIAC meet on May 11-12 at Carleton College.
