Ole Baseball Opens Season with Sweep of UMD Bulldogs
March 5, 2001
On Sunday, March 4 the Oles opened their 2001 season with a doubleheader against the UMD Bulldogs in the HHH Metrodome. Behind strong pitching from juniors Scott Stadsklev (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Reid Rose (Long Lake, Minn.), the Oles pulled out a 5-4 victory. Leading the way for the Oles offensively were senior Casey Coulson (Apple Valley, Minn.), junior Lars Finanger (Decorah, Iowa), and first-year Joe Pavelko (Richfield, Minn.) who all contributed key hits enroute to the win.
The Oles completed their sweep of the Bulldogs with a 2-1 victory in game two. Solid defensive play and a spectacular one-hit pitching performance by first-year Charlie Ruud (Cannon Falls, Minn.), propelled the Oles to victory. Senior Nick Beissel (Lakeville, Minn.) provided the excitement on offense with a towering home run. Coulson, Pavelko, and junior Dan LaManna (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) all provided some offensive punch.
The Oles will begin their spring trip on March 17, when they take on Morningside and Midland College in Joplin, Mo.
