The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team placed fifth at last weekend?s MIAC Championship meet. The Oles scored 76.5 points in the meet, almost 20 points better than they were projected to score. St. Thomas won the meet, followed by Concordia, Gustavus, Carleton and the Oles.

Leading the way for the Oles was sophomore Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.). On Friday, Daymont defended her title in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:39.97, which ranks her sixth in the country. One hour later Daymont placed third in the 600 meter dash, with a time of 1:38.35, just missing the school record. On Saturday, Daymont won the 1000 meter run, running away from the field with a time of 2:58.19. This was the fastest time run in this event since 1988, and also narrowly missed the MIAC and school record times. All three of these times are Daymont's personal best efforts. Daymont qualified in both the 800 M and 1500 M for the NCAA National Meet, but will enter only the 1500 M.

Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) vaulted to a 2nd place finish (on misses) and co-set the MIAC record at 11' 2 1/4". This is also a school record. Hengel's vault earned her a berth into the NCAA Championship meet.

The distance duo of Junior Brigid Franey (Lexington, Ky.) and Anne Sateren (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) represented the Oles with two great races. Franey finished 3rd in both the 3000 meter run (10:37.16) and 5000 meter run. Her time of 18:26.06 in the 5000 meter run ranks her second on the All -Time List of St. Olaf athletes. Sateren placed fifth in the 5000 with a time of 18:35.83, and 7th in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:46.57. Her 5000 M time also lands her 5th among the best Oles ever.

Other Oles contributed points to the team score. First year runners Marit Grorud (Fremont, Neb.) and Abby Love (FY, Appleton, Wis.) placed sixth and eighth respectively in the 800 meter run with times of 2:24.17 and 2:24.25. Senior Katie Storlie (St. Louis Park, Minn.) finished in sixth place in the 1000 meter run with a life-time best time of 3:11.89. First-year Becky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) had two sixth place finishes. On Thursday Peterson earned sixth place in the pentathlon with 2853 points, ranking her third in that event on the St. Olaf All-Time list. Peterson placed 6th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.75 (7.71 in prelims). Junior Sarah Beggs (Klamath Falls, Ore.) jumped almost two feet better than ever before earning her sixth place in the triple jump with a leap of 33'10.25". Sophomore Leah Dvorak (Elma, Iowa) tied for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 4'9.75".

The Distance Medley relay team of sophomore Traci Bartz (Bemidji, Minn.), sophomore Dawn Mielke (Arlington, Minn.), Hengel and Storlie had a great race finishing in 5th place with a time of 13:07.71. The 4x200 meter relay of first years Erin Davidson (St. Paul, Minn.), Jennifer Levenhagen (Appleton, Wis.), junior Allison Gelvin (Avon, Co.) and senior co-captain Sara Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) finished in 6th place with a time of 1:54.32.

Janet Hengel and Megan Daymont will travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin on March 9-10 to compete at the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Meet. The rest of the Oles will enjoy the March recovery period before gearing up for the upcoming outdoor season.
