St. Olaf Nordic Skiers Compete at NCAA Championships
March 13, 2001
Jay Eidem (So., Bloomington, Minn.) and Sonja Bostrom (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) returned this weekend from the NCAA Division I Cross-Country Skiing Championships in Middlebury, Vermont with the best results ever by a St. Olaf male or female skier.
Eidem's top race was a 25th place in the 20 kilometer freestyle event, and Bostrom placed 18th in her 15 kilometer freestyle race. Both skiers were competing in a field of 37 of the best collegiate skiers in the country who had qualified for the championships through the central, western, or eastern collegiate skiing circuits. These 37 skiers included a strong contingent of European-born skiers who are in the U.S. on skiing scholarships, and these "euros" add even greater depth to the quality of the racing field.
Eidem?s and Bostrom's results reflect the great improvement the St. Olaf Cross-Country Ski team has gained over the past few years. This was Eidem's first trip to the championships, and Bostrom's second, and both skiers are looking forward to even greater improvements next season.
