March 27, 2001
The St. Olaf men's tennis team is looking forward to another good year in 2001. In addition to head coach Scott Nesbit, the program has added Tom Gillman to help coach in February and March. Tom is the head boys? and Girls? tennis coach at Red Wing High School. He was named Minnesota Boys? Tennis Coach of the Year in 2000.
The men's team has a great core of returning players. Senior captain Pete Nau (Cedar Rapids, IA) comes off an excellent 2000 season where he finished second in the conference at number two singles and first along with Jon Campbell (2000 graduate) at number one doubles. Nau is joined by junior Karl Wilbur who finished second in the conference at number three singles. Karl is a former Minnesota State team champion from Edina, Minnesota. Two other juniors are on the squad. Brandon Hall from Dubuque, Iowa who played well at number five singles and number three doubles and Tim Smith from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, who contributed at number two doubles with Wilbur. The returners are rounded off by sophomore Peder Thoen from Kolsas, Norway. Peder had a good season playing number four singles and number three doubles.
The men's team is significantly bolstered by the addition of three talented first year players. Identical twins Ted and Tom Nagle from Oglesby, Illinois were state doubles runners-up in Illinois in 2000. Dan Cohen played number one singles for Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Considering the strong core of returning players together with the addition of three excellent first year players, the Oles are looking for another successful tennis season. Said Coach Scott Nesbit. "We have added some very competitive matches to our schedule including Coe College, Illinois Wesleyan, St. Cloud State, Winona State, Mankato State, and several Arizona junior colleges during our spring trip. As always, competing well in our conference matches will be one of our main goals. We hope to be right in the thick of things for the top spots in the standings.
