Women's Tennis Returns Good Core of Players for 2001 Season
March 27, 2001
The St. Olaf women's tennis team is looking forward to another great season in 2000. One of the highlights of the off-season has been the addition of Kristi Carlson Stets to our coaching staff. She is a former St. Olaf women's tennis player and is joined by returning head coach Scott Nesbit and returning assistant coach, Ann Leming.
The women's team returns nine of twelve players from last year's squad. Seniors include Alysaa Derksen from Appleton, Wisconsin. Alyssa played many matches at numbers five and six singles in 2000 and is also a team captain this year. Rebekah VanWieren from Holland, Michigan is the Oles? other senior. Rebekah played number two singles last year. Juniors include Abigail Betts from Bethesda, Maryland, Bethany Kochsiek from LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Lindsay Gorham from Wenatchee, Washington. Sophomores include Jennifer Ison from Urbana, Illinois who played number two singles and doubles, Yvonne Yang from Appleton, Wisconsin who played number one doubles, and Janelle Sagness from Mankato, Minnesota who played number six singles last year.
The women's team is also strengthened by the addition of first -year player Jamie Brau from Arlington, Minnesota. Brau qualified for the state tournament last year in singles.
The women's team has traditionally challenged for the top three spots in the conference and this year should be no different. Teams such as Gustavus Adolphus, University of St. Thomas, St. Benedict, Bethel and Carleton will be among the main competition for the top spots.
