Ole Women's Basketball Opens New Year with Win
January 4, 2001
The Ole women's basketball team opened the New Year with a 63-49 win at Bethel College. On the heels of a three-game losing streak at the holiday break, the Oles controlled the tempo of the game from the outset, with a swarming defense, causing 31 Royal turnovers.
Amanda Renneke (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) led the charge for the Oles and topped all scorers. Renneke had 16 points and seven rebounds, coupled with five steals and five assists. First year Jill Johnson (Butterfield, Minn.) followed with 12 points and Cara Battles (Jr., McGregor, Minn.) added 11.
St. Olaf took an early lead and one they would never relinquish. Taking a four point lead at intermission, the Ole defense dominated the second half and the Oles received insurance points from the charity stripe, going 18-22.
Said Coach Pat Buresh, "This was definitely our best defensive effort of the season and our free throw shooting was outstanding."
The Oles are 4-4 on the season (2-3 MIAC) and will take on the Macalester Scots at 3:00 on Saturday, January 6 at Skoglund Center.
