A Festival of Trombones concerts scheduled in Northfield Jan. 14, Rochester Jan. 21

NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? St. Olaf College?s Trombone Choir, directed by Paul Niemisto, will perform in "A Festival of Trombones" concerts in Northfield and Rochester on Sunday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 21.

The Jan. 14 Northfield concert will be at 3:30 p.m. in St. John?s Lutheran Church. The Jan. 21 Rochester concert will be at 3:30 p.m. in Rochester?s Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 11th Avenue and 12th Street NW. At both concerts the St. Olaf Trombone Choir will perform jointly with the Rochester/Mayo Foundation Trombone Choir.

Admission to both concerts is complimentary, but collections will be taken to defray transportation costs.

The concerts will feature pieces performed by individual and combined groups. Combined massed trombone music will include "Tower Music," "Finlandia," "Over the Rainbow," "British Eighth March," "Elsa?s Procession to the Cathedral" and "Barnum and Bailey?s March."

The Rochester/Mayo Foundation Trombone Choir is comprised of musicians from the Rochester area, primarily from the medical community. The group is led my trombonist and physician Dr Moses Rodriguez of the Mayo Clinic. Northfield resident and St. Olaf alumnus Scott Kruse also is a member of the group.

The 15-member St. Olaf Trombone Choir will perform music by Hungarian composer Hidas, Renaissance-era transcriptions, and music for trombones and organ by St. Olaf College composer and music faculty member Charles Forsberg.
