Ole Hoopsters Take Number One St. Ben's to OT

The St. Olaf Women?s Basketball team put up a valiant effort, but succumbed to the number one Blazers in overtime 72-63. The loss puts the Oles? season record at 5-5 overall, 3-4 in the MIAC.
Carrie Cooley (Jr., Villard, Minn.) led all scorers with 19 points and 9 rebounds for the game. High scorer for the Blazers was Michelle Barlau with 17 points. Both teams traded baskets in the first half with the Oles taking the half time lead 29-28.
Cooley opened the second half with a three point shot off the right wing and Cara Battles (Jr., McGregor) quickly followed with a three point shot from the top on the ensuing possession. The Oles cleaned the boards on the next defensive possession and Amanda Renneke (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) countered with a three of her own from the left wing, forcing the Blazers to call a timeout and putting the Oles up 37-29. St. Olaf held a five to eight point lead until the six minute mark, when the Blazers forced two quick turnovers to tie the game at 48 a piece. With 15 seconds remaining the Blazers took a 56-53 lead and with nine seconds remaining, Amanda Renneke hit the trey to send the game into overtime.
St. Benedict hit three field goals and scored 10 points from the free throw line to gain the overtime victory and keep themselves atop the MIAC at 7-0. The Oles' Carrie Cooley went 7-8 from the free throw line in the overtime.
Elisa Hatlevig (Sr., Rushford, Minn.) followed Cooley in the scoring column with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Lisa Eidenschink (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) had nine points and tallied 11 rebounds for the host Oles.
The Oles will travel to Augsburg College for a 7:30 game on Monday, January 15 and will begin a six game home stand on Wednesday, January 17 when they play host to the College of St. Catherine.
