Ole Swimmers Swamp Macalester
January 16, 2001
On Friday, January 12, the St. Olaf men?s and women?s swimming and diving traveled to St. Paul for a dual meet verses Macalester College. Coach Bob Hauck said, "Both the men and women had great races. Going into the meet we knew that the number of men participating on the Macalester team were few. That left the St. Olaf men with the challenge of racing against each other in some cases. Even with fewer opponents, the men?s team was able to do a wonderful job of creating a competitive atmosphere amongst themselves." The final score of the men?s meet was St. Olaf 150 and Macalester 34. On the women?s side, the final score was St. Olaf 172 and Macalester 69.
The women started the meet out with a win in the 200 meter medley relay. The team of Emily Bendson (SO, Edina, MN), Anna Guenther (SO, Minneapolis, MN), Ellen Prange (SR, Madison, WI), and Sonia Karimi (SO, Rochester, MN) came in first with a time of 2:12.19. Next, in the 800 meter freestyle, Laura Schutt (SO, Niles, IL) swam a tight race with her opponent from Macalester. With her strong finish, Schutt was able to complete the distance event in a time of 9:47.52, and obtain first place honors. Liz Hathaway (FR, Lincoln, NE) showed her freestyle talent by swimming the 200 meter freestyle in a time of 2:19.88, which was fast enough to obtain a first place finish. Anne Lindberg (FR, Maple Grove, MN) swam the 200 IM for the first time this year, and proved to be a great competitor. She was her way to first place, and a time of 2:39.53. Stacy Koskiniemi had a great night of diving on the 1 meter board. She was able to accumulate 210.20 points, which gave her first place honors. Ellen Prange had a great swim in the 100 meter butterfly. She finished into the wall first coming in with a time of 1:10.82. Chrissy Soule swam the 100 freestyle in the time of 1:04.62 to swim her way to a first place finish. In the 100 meter backstroke Hathaway took first place honors for the Oles coming in with a time of 1:13.20. Jen Williams had a great round of diving on the 3 meter board for the Ole women, and scored 209.85 points to capture first place honors. A change from sprint freestyle to breaststroke didn?t seem to effect Anna Guenther as she swam her way to a first place finish, and a new pool record by finishing with a time of 1:18.08. The women closed the meet just as they opened it, with another win. This time however, the 200 freestyle relay team of Debbie Pagels (SR, Kansas City, MO), Soule, Schutt, and Prange was able to give the record board a new look at the Macalester pool by coming into the wall first with a time of 1:56.88.
The Ole men started off their meet just as the women did, with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of BJ Brent (SO, Ankeny, IA), Eric Palmer (FR, Roseville, MN), Adam Garrett (FR, Cannon Falls, MN) and Mark Lykins (SR, Nisswa, MN) came in first with a time of 1:54.12. In the 200 meter freestyle, Garrett came in at 2:05.81 for the win. BJ Brent won the 50 meter freestyle for the Oles with a time of 25.60. Pat Marzolf (FR, St. Paul, MN) took the first place honors in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.73. Garrett pulled off his second win of the evening in the 100 meter butterfly, finishing with a time of 59.40. Ryan Lussenden (SR, Morris, MN) swam the 100 meter freestyle in 57.10 seconds, and secured him the win. Chris Anderson (SR, Edina, MN) was the "outside smoke" while swimming the 100 meter backstroke in lane 1. Anderson won the race from the outside lane, finishing it with a time of 1:03.89. Lee Thomsen (FR, El Cajon, CA) swam the 400 meter freestyle in a time of 4:25.03 to receive first place honors. Chris Jacobsen (JR, St. Paul, MN) swam his way to a win in the 100 meter breaststroke. The male divers continue to be very successful this season. Gabe Kortuem (SR, Andover, MN) took first place honors on both boards during the meet. Kortuem scored 277.90 points on the 1 meter board and 294.45 points on the 3 meter board. Kortuem set a new pool record with his score on the 3 meter board and surpassed the 2001 qualifying standard for the national meet on both boards. Kyle Rudser (JR, Northfield, MN) also showed his talents in the diving events. On the 3 meter board, Rudser surpassed the national qualifying standard with a score of 290.75.
