Schlenker Leads Ole Hoopsters to Upset Victory
January 16, 2001
The Oles played their hearts out yesterday, beating Augsburg 82-76, and moving up their record to 2-7 MIAC and 4-9 Overall. The Oles were lead by Matt Schlenker (first year Rochester, MN) who scored the game high of 18 points and had 9 rebounds, and Mike Ludwig (sophomore, Blaine, MN) who scored 15 points and racked up 7 rebounds. The Auggies were lead by Travis Hinze who scored 18 points.
The game started with the Oles in the lead for much of the first half. Hallie Willams (senior, Ft. Worth, TX) wowed the crowd as he scored 3 shots from beyond the arch leading the way for the Oles. The rest of the game promised excitement as the first half ended 44-28 in favor of the home team.
The energized Ole crowd cheered on their team as Schlenker sunk a 2 point shot to start off the half, and the Oles led on the scoreboard until half way through the second half, when in a matter of minutes, the Auggies rallied and scored 9 points leaving them closely behind by the score 63-60. The Oles were not about to give up, however, and they fought hard to keep their lead. Schlenker once again came to the rescue, scoring 4 out of 6 free throws in the last ten minutes of the game. The Oles were also helped by Kevin Jaunich (sophomore, Delano, MN) who scored 8 out of 10 points in the last half of the game. The Oles were able to bring home a victory as they persisted down the stretch handing the Auggies their first MIAC defeat.
