January 23, 2001
The St. Olaf Men?s Hockey team traveled to Wisconsin this past weekend for a 3 game non-conference series and came away with three very impressive wins by beating MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) 13-2 on Friday night, 6-2 on Saturday night, and Lawrence University 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.
In the first game, St. Olaf wasted no time getting on the board as senior alternate captain Tim Legreid (Moorhead, MN) buried a one-timer just 1:09 into the game. Junior forward Justin Bronce (Eden Prairie, MN) would add another goal at 2:43 of the first period and the Oles never looked back. The Oles completely dominated the game the rest of the way allowing only 27 shots on goal and 2 goals. The Oles took advantage of numerous MSOE penalties and went 6 of 12 on the power play for the game. Bronce led St. Olaf with 3 goals and 1 assist. Simison also had 2 goals and 2 assists. Junior forward Craig Newman (Eagan, MN) also added 2 goals and 3 assists as the Oles rolled over the host Raiders 13-2. Sophomore goaltender Jake Bullard (Bloomington, MN) stopped 25 of 27 shots in recording the win.
The second game of the series provided to be a much tougher challenge for the Oles as MSOE jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals at 12:36 of the first period and 5:15 of the second period. However, the Oles never lost their composure as Simison scored of a rebound on the power play at 13:52 of the second period to get the Oles right back in the game. Sophomore forward Nick Hanson (Eden Prairie, MN) tied the game moments later at 14:37 with a pretty wrist shot. Legreid would give the Oles the lead for good at 16:42 of the second with another rebound goal. Senior alternate captain Adam Will (Lino Lakes, MN), senior captain Jason Haider (Lino Lakes, MN) and first-year forward Wally Cisewski (Wayzata, MN) all would add goals in the third period as the Oles cruised to a 6-2 victory. First-year goaltender Garret Hasti (St. Louis Park, MN) stopped 33 of 35 in the win for St. Olaf
The third game of the series matched the Oles against the Vikings of Lawrence University. Once again, St. Olaf wasted no time getting on the board as Simison scored his fourth goal of the weekend at 4:57 of the first period on a shorthanded 2 on 1 pass from Newman. Lawrence would tie the game on that same power play, but the Oles did not panic. Will, Legreid, and senior forward Nate Olsen (Northfield, MN) all scored goals as the Oles grabbed a commanding 4-1 lead after one period. Olsen would tally one more goal while Cisewski and Will would add two more goals apiece as the Oles rolled to a 9-2 victory.
