Ole Wrestlers Fourth at MIAC Duals
January 29, 2001
The St. Olaf wrestlers finished fourth in the MIAC Team Dual Meet Tournament on January 26-27 at Augsburg College. The Oles posted strong wins against Carleton and St.Thomas, but lost to nationally ranked Augsburg , St. John's and dropped a tough match to Concordia. The Oles continue to miss two top wrestlers out of the lineup due to injury, and had to forfeit two weight classes in every match.
The Oles were paced all weekend by their senior captains. Shaun Murphy (Northfield, Minn.) went 4-1 with one pin and one technical fall to post the best record on the team. Andy Brown (Plymouth, Minn.) went 3-2 including two pins, and Matt Pichietti (Chicago, Ill.) won two matches, both by pin. Sophomore Alex Morf (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) made his return from a neck injury that has sidelined him for all of January, and posted a 3-0 record. The Oles also saw great matches from their more inexperienced wrestlers, most notably sophomore Kenny Knight (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Geoff Wendt (Anaconda, Mont.). The MIAC team tournament is a great opportunity to wrestle against the competition that the Oles will face in the conference tournament at the end of the season, and the team remains highly optimistic. Alex Morf is hopeful for the team. "We had a good weekend. Everybody wrestled hard and performed as well as they've done all season. We're looking ahead to conference and we think we'll be able to shake things up a bit."
The Oles? next competition is at home at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1 against UW-River Falls, Cornell College and Carleton College.
