The St. Olaf men?s hockey team opened the 2000-2001 season with a sweep of Gustavus by beating the Gusties 3-2 on Friday night in St. Peter and 3-1 in Northfield on Saturday.

In the season opener, Gutavus got off to a quick start at 4:53 of the first period with a goal by Adam Mosely. The game remained close with both teams playing a defensively minded game. In the third period, Mosely scored his second goal of the game at 2:11 to give the Gusties a 2-0. The Oles roared back with a pair of goals by sophomore Brian Meyer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) at 8:23 and 15:56 of the third period to send the game into overtime. The Oles opened the overtime session with a power play, but failed to convert on the man advantage. St. Olaf was then assessed a penalty at the 4:24 mark of overtime and was forced to play the rest of the game short-handed. However, with 10 seconds left in the game, senior captain Jason Haider (Lino Lakes, Minn.) blocked a Gustavus shot and fed senior alternate captain Adam Will (North St. Paul, Minn.) for the game-winning goal with 1.3 seconds remaining. Sophomore goaltender Jake Bullard (Bloomington, Minn.) played a huge game in the nets for the Oles stopping 23 of 25 shots and made some spectacular saves down the stretch to lead the Oles to their first win.

In the series finale at Northfield, the game remained scoreless until junior Craig Newman (Eagan, Minn.) buried a rebound of a shot by senior Nate Olsen (Northfield, Minn.) at 5:16 of the second period to give the Oles a 1-0 lead. Gustavus answered back at 10:01 of the second with Aaron Aller?s goal, but the Oles never lost their composure as Newman scored his second goal of the game at 12:19 of the second period on the power play to give the Oles a 2-1 lead. Will added an empty net goal with 24 seconds remaining to seal the victory and the sweep for the Oles. The Oles dominated the play, out shooting Gustavus 35-17 and never allowed the Gusties to get any significant offensive pressure on St. Olaf. Bullard stopped 16 of 17 shots to get his second win of the season.

With the victories, St. Olaf sits atop the MIAC with a 2-0 record. St. Olaf will next travel to Moorhead for a weekend series with the Cobbers of Concordia. Game time is at 7 pm on Friday, November 10 and 2 pm on Saturday, November 11. The next home contest for the Oles is on December 1 against Hamline University at 7 pm.
