Jazz Ensembles II, III to perform Friday

NORTHFIELD, Minn. ?St. Olaf College?s Jazz Ensembles II and III will perform a concert at the college on Friday, Nov. 17, with guest artist Ramon Vasquez performing on trumpet.

The concert, free and open to the public, will be at 8 p.m. in the Pause of Buntrock Commons. The Jazz Ensembles II and III are directed by music faculty member David Hagedorn.

The Jazz II portion of the concert will include "Isfahan" by Ellington and Strayhorn; "Frankie?s Tune" and "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" by Bob Mintzer; "Blue Moan" by Don Sebesky; "Don?t Get Around Much Anymore" by Duke Ellington; "Impressions" by John Coltrane; "Wiggle Waggle" by Herbie Hancock; and "Tadd?s Delight" by Tadd Dameron.

The Jazz III part of the program will include "The Buckethead Shuffle" by Tony Guerrero; "Sweet Georgia Brown" by Bernie, Pinkard and Casey; "Los Altibajos" by Rick Lawn; "Blues Around the Corner" by Rick Cornish; "Just a Closer Walk" arranged by Dean Sorenson; and "Power Surge" by Mark Taylor.

Guest performer Vasquez teaches trumpet at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and is an artist/clinician for the Edwards Instrument Co. of Elkhorn, Wis. He has played trumpet with the One O?Clock lab band and Two O?Clock lab band at North Texas University, played lead trumpet with the Big Time Jazz Orchestra in Duluth, and performed with the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, the 25th Anniversary Disney All-American College Marching Band, and the Pete Peterson Experience Big Band of Dallas.

In 1997 Vasquez won the masters division of the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Va., and he has performed in the Altenburg Competition in Germany, the International Trumpet Guild Conference in 1994, and various other classical ensembles.

Hagedorn teaches percussion, jazz studies and music theory at St. Olaf College. He has performed on percussion instruments with world-renowned jazz musicians and ensembles, has regularly performed with jazz groups Pure Joy and Low Blows, and has recorded with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra on Blue Note Recordings and with jazz singer Debbie Duncan on Igmod Recordings.

In addition to jazz, Hagedorn performs classical music with such groups as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble.
