Percussion Ensemble to present fall concert

NORTHFIELD, Minn. ?St. Olaf College?s Percussion Ensemble will present its fall concert Sunday, Nov. 19, featuring student guest conductors Jayce Ogren and James Miller, as well as members of the St. Olaf Dance Department.

The 2 p.m. concert, free and open to the public, will be in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music. The Percussion Ensemble is directed by St. Olaf music faculty member David Hagedorn.

The concert will include "Concerto for Timpani and Percussion Ensemble (1984)" by John Beck; "Canticle No. 1" by Lou Harrison; and "The Whole Toy Laid Down" by David Hollinden. An "Improvisation" piece will feature the ensemble with a St. Olaf dance troupe, directed by dance faculty member Anthony Roberts.

Hagedorn teaches percussion, jazz studies and music theory at St. Olaf College. He has performed on percussion instruments with world-renowned jazz musicians and ensembles, has regularly performed with jazz groups Pure Joy and Low Blows, and has recorded with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra on Blue Note Recordings and with jazz singer Debbie Duncan on Igmod Recordings.

In addition to jazz, Hagedorn performs classical music with such groups as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble.
