November 29, 2000
NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? St. Olaf College senior Michael Eliason has received the Open Door Foundation Scholarship for computer science students ? the second year that a St. Olaf student has received the award.
Eliason received the scholarship on Nov. 17 from Raymond Denning, president and CEO of Denning Consulting Services, Robert J. Schmidt of Sysdyne, and Jeff Zinnecker of I.T. Doctors (a Zinncorp Company). Representing St. Olaf College at the awards ceremony were St. Olaf Senior Principal Gift Officer Paul Schmitt and Principal Gift Officer Michael Kyle.
The Open Door Foundation award is for students enrolled in science with a computer emphasis. Recipients must be active in their communities and demonstrate financial need. The Open Door Foundation is a consortium of national independent computer consulting firms who encourage college computer science students to become consultants.
Eliason, a Minnetonka, Minn., student who graduated from Minnetonka High School, is a mathematics and economics major with a concentration in computer studies. He has performed internships at three companies as part of his St. Olaf studies, and plans a career in computer science.
Denning, Minnesota Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998 and a 1979 St. Olaf graduate, pointed out at the awards ceremony that St. Olaf is an ideal incubator for students seeking a liberal arts education that encourages entrepreneurial study and experiential education.
St. Olaf College prepares students to become responsible citizens of the world, fostering development of mind, body and spirit. A four-year, coeducational liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), St. Olaf has a student enrollment of 2,950 and a full-time faculty of approximately 256. It is one of Money Guide?s top 100 "elite values in college education today," and it leads the nation?s colleges in number of students who study abroad.
