St Olaf Choir to perform with Minnesota Orchestra

The St Olaf Choir will leave the Hill and travel to Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis next month to perform with the Minnesota Orchestra in Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt. Performances will be held March 15 at 11 a.m. and March 16-17 at 8 p.m.

Peer Gynt, based on the play by Henrik Ibsen, tells the story of the Norwegian anti-hero Peer -- played by baritone and St. Olaf alumnus Doug Scholz-Carlson '90 -- who struggles with the demands placed upon him by society and the world. Set to Grieg's incidental music, the story is remembered worldwide for songs such as "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and "Morning Mood." The music will be brought to life at Orchestra Hall through the performances of actors, soloists and the St Olaf Choir.

Artist in Residence Sigrid Johnson, conductor of the St. Olaf Manitou Singers, will be preparing the choir while Conductor Anton Armstrong '78 is at Baylor University, Texas, this semester to fulfill the requirements of the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching he received last year.

Tickets for the performances are available at the Minnesota Orchestra's website or at 800-292-4141. Student and rush tickets also are available at reduced rates.
