St. Olaf to host Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra
March 30, 2007
The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Boyd, will perform Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel at St. Olaf College. Soloists include violinist Steven Isserlis and organist Layton James. The concert, sponsored by the St. Olaf Department of Music, is free and open to the public.
The performance will include four pieces: "The Past, The Passion for 14 Players" by George Tsontakis, Handel's Concerto in D Minor for Organ and Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme" and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3.
The Scottish-born Boyd has begun his third season as artistic partner of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, with whom he performs, records and tours regularly. He also is music director of the Manchester Camerata and serves as principal guest conductor of the City of London Sinfonia, with whom he will tour China this season.
Isserlis, who will perform on the Feuermann Stradivarius of 1730 (on loan by The Nippon Music Foundation of Japan), was named Classical Musician of the Year by London's Time Out magazine in 2002. Isserlis is author of a children's book on music, Why Beethoven Threw the Stew.
"Skip" James has been principal keyboard artist with the SPCO since 1969. He also is a conductor and composer internationally known for his cadenzas for Baroque and Classical concertos. He has been a clinician for the American Choral Directors Association and the American Guild of Organists.
