Assistant Professor of Art/Art History John Saurer, a Hope College alumnus and member of the St. Olaf faculty since 1995, displayed his sculpture, titled "Shadow Casting," at last year's Hope Alumni Art Invitational in Holland, Mich. "I have discovered that my artwork is a metaphor for order: sometimes re-expressing order found in the landscape, a mechanical process, the rhythm of form, personal relationships and the life around me," wrote Saurer in his artist statement. "Each work is often a collaboration of many independent parts that are crafted to come together and express a larger whole."

Saurer explains that the 160-inch by 75-inch sculpture, made of steel and wood, was driven by three basic concepts: a reference to primitive and contemporary forms, the unique relationship between two and three-dimensional media, and the concept of seeking or reaching a specific goal ("shadow" casting in fly fishing is the act of carefully lengthening line to a desired distance).
