February 10, 2007

Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall, 1 p.m.

Canadian Brass member Bernhard Scully began playing the French horn when he was 11. While in high school he lived in Minnesota and played with the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony and the Minnesota Youth Symphony. Since then he has played with numerous groups throughout the Midwest, including the Sinfonia da Camera in Champagne, Ill., and the South Dakota Symphony, and has served as a regular long-term substitute with the Minnesota Orchestra and with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He also has been integrally involved with the Kendall Betts Horn Camp, and has participated in a number of chamber music festivals.

The Canadian Brass - having just celebrated its 35th season - has a long history of recording classical repertoire, and they have been invited by the Canadian Government to play for visiting heads of states on numerous official occasions. Their more than 60 recordings to date include works by Purcell, Vivaldi, Gabrieli, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Wagner - all in meticulously crafted transcriptions that are setting new musical traditions in brass performance.

All members of the Canadian Brass enjoy training the next generation of players. On their travels around the world - performing on gold-plated Yamaha instruments - they often pause for master classes. The class is free and open to the public.
