Business magazine cites St. Olaf for smart way to save money
December 17, 2006
In a list of 101 "smart-revenue generators" and other money-saving ideas, University Business magazine cites St. Olaf for its efforts to offer phone services to neighboring Carleton College and the Northfield hospital. "St. Olaf College (Minn.) leaders found a way to cut out a utility bill, offer a service to the greater community, and earn some revenue at the same time," says the article in the December 2006 issue of the magazine. "Staff were already handling maintenance, wire pulling, and other phone system work. Starting their own phone company seemed like a logical next step." The magazine notes that St. Olaf saves upwards of $15,000 a month with the service, noting the college's ability "to sell dial-tone, long-distance, cable, and internet service throughout the area. It's the only local service providing a fiber optic network directly to businesses."
