The Viola da Gamba Society of America will be having its annual week-long conclave at St. Olaf College from July 23-30.

The viola da gamba is an early-music instrument with six strings, frets and a flat back. For local residents interested in studying the gamba, Julie Elhard will offer a free beginning class during the event (instruments provided). To reserve an instrument, come to registration (lower level of Ytterboe Hall) from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 23.

On Thursday, July 27, the group will present a free public concert at 7:30 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall in Christiansen Hall of Music. Featuring world-renowned musician David Douglass and friends, the concert will be entitled "When Worlds Unite: Music of the Presence Chamber."
