Student-run PAC to bring Wheels of Justice to campus Thursday

The student-run Political Awareness Committee is launching an academic year of programming tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 15), by bringing speakers from Wheels of Justice to campus.

Based in Luck, Wis., Wheels of Justice bills itself as "an independent, grassroots campaign of education and outreach" that seeks to prevent "war, terror and occupation" in Iraq and Palestine.

"During the day, they will be talking with students at a table out in front of the Caf," says PAC issues director Chase Donaldson, a junior from Kildeer, Ill.

At 7 p.m. a lecture in Viking Theater, on the ground floor of Buntrock Commons, will feature people from Iraq and Palestine with first-hand knowledge about the issues that Wheels of Justice addresses.

"With the approach of the voting for the Iraqi constitution and the recent withdrawl of Israeli settlers and troops from Gaza, these are very pertinent issues," Donaldson says. "We hope these events will give students one perspective from people who have been there and have witnessed what is going on."

At 8:30 p.m. in the Pause, political satirist and songwriter Dave Lippman ("the world's only known singing CIA agent") will perform. The concert is a departure from the usual PAC programming, Donaldson explains. "It breaks us away from our more recent lecture- or debate-based presentations of the issues," he says.

All events are free and open to the public.

The Political Awareness Committee is an arm of the St. Olaf Student Government Association. PAC, says its website, aims "to enlighten students about the American political process and inspire them to actively engage their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States and the world."

Last academic year PAC sponsored well-attended lectures by former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and politically conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter.
