Professor Emeritus lauded for Nobel Peace Prize Forum sculpture AUGUST 31, 2004 — Mac Gimse, a professor emeritus of art, responded to the theme of the 16th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum in a way most natural to him: He created art. Gimse's sculpture, which he created for the forum held at St. Olaf in February 2004 and featuring former President Jimmy Carter, was praised recently in The Lutheran magazine. Osiecki resigns as women's hockey coach AUGUST 26, 2004 — Tom Osiecki, the first Womenıs Hockey Coach at St. Olaf College, has resigned after four seasons, Athletic Director Matt McDonald announced late Wednesday evening. Osiecki compiled a 29-45-4 (23-45-4 MIAC) record at St. Olaf and was the MIACıs Coach of the Year in 2002-03. Ole athletes take the field AUGUST 25, 2004 — Soccer, footbal, volleyball, cross country and golf kick off their fall seasons as the St. Olaf school year starts. Men and Women's soccer opens at home against Bethany College on Aug. 25, cross country begins its season with a meet against Macalester on Sept. 2, Ole football opens at home agaist Luther on Sept. 11 and volleyball begins with a tournament at UW-River Falls. New grants will help St. Olaf implement 'green' science AUGUST 18, 2004 — In 2004, St. Olaf science and mathematics programs received more than $3 million in new grants, including two new grants awarded to support the college's environmentally friendly science initiatives. Something new in international education AUGUST 13, 2004 — There is an exciting new model in international education at St. Olaf. Beginning this fall, up to 15 St. Olaf College and Yonsei University students will study and live together at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, and from January 2005 through the end of May, they'll do the same at St. Olaf. It's all part of the new Yonsei-St. Olaf cohort exchange program. "Our hope," says Patrick Quade '65, director of International and Off-Campus Studies, "is that our students and their partners will experience a great academic program and a powerful cross-cultural learning experience." Take a seat on new/old Adirondack chairs AUGUST 13, 2004 — The next time you're on campus, look for one of the honey-colored Adirondack chairs made from Douglas Fir. The chairs, 20 in all and crafted by college carpenter Greg Menning, are new. The wood is not. Remember the old bleachers from Skoglund Athletic Center? When they were removed in 2000 to make way for the new bleachers, the wood was saved and, in keeping with college tradition, stored for re-use. "It was beautiful lumber," says Director of Facilities Pete Sandberg who came up with the idea. "We wanted to use it for something special." MPR's 'In Praise of Play' features St. Olaf conference speakers AUGUST 12, 2004 — As the Olympic Games begin in Athens, "In Praise of Play," a broadcast inspired by St. Olaf's June conference: "Sport and Religion: An Inquiry into American Cultural Values," will air on Minnesota Public Radio's "Speaking of Faith." You can hear it in the Twin Cities on KNOW 91.1 FM Sunday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. It will also air on public radio stations across the country throughout the weekend, and you can replay it by visiting the Speaking of Faith website. St. Olaf radio station being sold to Minnesota Public Radio AUGUST 11, 2004 — The Star Tribune quotes St. Olaf Vice President for College Relations Jan McDaniel, MPR President Bill Kling and Minnesota composer Dominick Argento in its coverage of the pending sale of radio station WCAL to Minnesota Public Radio. Two days after the sale was announced, the Star Tribune editorial page eulogized the station. St. Olaf College reaches agreement to sell WCAL to Minnesota Public Radio AUGUST 10, 2004 — The public radio service of St. Olaf College will be sold to Minnesota Public Radio this fall, college officials announced Aug. 10. The move allows the college to focus on its "core mission" of educating students and preparing them for lives of worth and service, said St. Olaf President Christopher M. Thomforde.
