Sprout selected to the ABCA Rawlings NCAA Division III All-American Baseball Team
MAY 29, 2001 — Brian Sprout (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) was named to the third team ABCA Rawlings NCAA Division III All-American Baseball Team. The All-American team consists of 43 players. Sprout and Jake Mauer of the University of St. Thomas were the only two MIAC players selected; Mauer was named to the second team.

Oles named to NCAA All-Midwest Region Baseball Team
MAY 23, 2001 — Four Oles were named to the NCAA All-Midwest baseball team. Shortstop Brian Sprout (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) and catcher Dan LaManna (Jr., So. St. Paul, Minn.) were selected to the first team and first baseman Nick Beissel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), along with pitcher Charlie Rudd (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) were named to the third team.

Ole Baseball receives seven All-Conference Selections
MAY 23, 2001 — St. Olaf baseball received 7 All-Conference selections and a Co-MVP. Brian Sprout (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) was voted Co-MVP along with Jake Mauer of the University of St. Thomas. Sprout is a three-time MIAC MVP, having been selected in his first two seasons.

Bresnan?s performance in the 800M (1:51.87) is an NCAA provisional. St. Olaf Mens Track and Field Second in MIAC Championships
MAY 14, 2001 — The St. Olaf men's track team punctuated an outstanding season with a runner-up finish at the MIAC outdoor championships last weekend. The Oles traveled across the river to Carleton's Laird Stadium hoping to repeat and possibly improve on their second-place finish at the indoor meet. Though they were able to up their indoor point total to an outstanding 134, St. Thomas's depth in the sprints and the hurdles proved decisive as they garnered 184 points.

Womens Track and Field Fifth at MIAC Championships
MAY 14, 2001 — The St. Olaf women's track and field team placed fifth with 70.5 points this past weekend at the MIAC Championship meet held at Carleton College. The University of St. Thomas won the meet scoring 183.5 with Concordia close behind. Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) was the only individual champion for the Oles winning the pole vault with a leap of 11'2.5".

St. Olaf College professor Ted Vessey wins national award for distinguished math teaching
MAY 14, 2001 — Put students first and they?ll learn mathematics, Ted Vessey believes. His formula works at St. Olaf College, where Vessey ? a math professor ? has been putting students first for years, and where students major in math at one of the highest rates in the nation.

Oles Eliminate Cobbers with 8-3 victory
MAY 13, 2001 — After knocking St. Mary?s University from the MIAC Tournament Friday night, St. Olaf College felled Concordia College 8-3 this Saturday afternoon in Dundas. The Oles amassed 14 hits in the victory, eliminating the team that defeated them in the first round yesterday. The win gives St. Olaf a chance to play last year?s tournament champion, the University of St. Thomas, for the rights to an NCAA Regional playoff berth.

Oles Fall to St. Thomas in MIAC Tournament
MAY 13, 2001 — St. Olaf College fell victim to defending MIAC Tournament champion University of St. Thomas this afternoon, losing 9-2 and giving the Tommies back-to-back titles. The score betrayed a very close battle in which St. Olaf actually outhit St.Thomas 9-8, but a seven-run seventh inning for St. Thomas broke the game wide open. The Tommies earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Regional Playoffs, their seventh consecutive bid; St. Olaf will have to wait at home and hope for one of the at-large bids into postseason play.

Oles Fall to Cobbers in First Round
MAY 12, 2001 — The St. Olaf College baseball team dropped its matchup with Concordia College 6-4 in the first round of the MIAC tournament this afternoon. The top-seeded Oles led for most of the game but couldn?t hold on down the stretch as a five-run eighth inning allowed the Cobbers to eclipse their lead.

St. Olaf Defeats St. Marys to Stay Alive
MAY 12, 2001 — St. Olaf College defeated St. Mary?s University 4-3 Friday evening, eliminating the Cardinals in the MIAC Baseball Tournament and staying alive to play Concordia College on Saturday, May 12 at1:00.

Sprout MIAC Baseball Player of the Week
MAY 11, 2001 — St. Olaf College junior Brian Sprout (Lake City, Minn.) helped the Oles to a 6-0 week. Sprout had 12 hits and scored 13 runs. He hit four home runs Monday to lead a doubleheader sweep of St. Thomas. In game one, Sprout hit a grand slam in the second inning to give the Oles a 5-2 lead, and he added a solo shot in the fourth in a 13-5 victory.

Rudd MIAC Pitcher of the Week
MAY 11, 2001 — St. Olaf College first-year pitcher Charlie Rudd (Cannon Falls, Minn.) went 2-0 and allowed only two earned runs in 11 innings. In game two against St. John's, Rudd pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits, one walk and one earned run with seven strikeouts.

Christopher Thomforde to receive honorary degree from Pennsylvania university
MAY 11, 2001 — St. Olaf College President Christopher Thomforde will receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., during the university?s 143rd commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 13.

MAY 9, 2001 — Four St. Olaf College seniors and one recent graduate have been named Fulbright Scholars for the 2001-2002 academic year, and two others have been named Fulbright alternates.

St. Olaf Women's Tennis Third in MIAC
MAY 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf women's tennis team competed in the MIAC conference tournament over the weekend, to finish in third place, with an overall record of 13-5. Gustavus Adolphus and the University of St. Thomas took first and second, respectively.

Ole Baseball Repeats as MIAC Champions
MAY 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf College baseball team hit the cover off the ball in a sweep of the University of St. Thomas. The Oles won the home doubleheader by scores of 13-5 and 18-5 respectively in an afternoon where they hit ten homeruns and clinched the regular season MIAC Conference Championship over a Tommie team ranked #1 nationally by last week?s ABCA poll.

Ole Fastpitch Splits with Carleton
MAY 7, 2001 — The Carleton Knights struck first, but the Oles bounced back in the third inning, scoring three runs. Meredith Larsen (So., Mason City, Iowa) advanced to first on a single and Andrea Hatleli (Sr., Austin, Minn.) reached first on catcher?s interference. Christy Boraas (Sr., Madison, Minn.) tripled to left center to drive in two runs and then scored on a Carrie Cooley (Jr., Villard, Minn.) single to right field.

Womens Track and Field has Big Week
MAY 7, 2001 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field competed Wednesday at the Tommie Twilight Meet at the University of St. Thomas and again on Friday at Macalester's Bag Pipe Invitational. The Oles took advantage of the first good weather conditions of the season and their performances reflected the ideal conditions.

Jon Berg Claims first MIAC Decathlon Title
MAY 7, 2001 — Co-captain Jon Berg (Sr., Armstrong, Minn.) set a St. Olaf school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA championships en route to his first MIAC decathlon victory last Friday and Saturday, May 5-6 at Carleton College. Berg teamed with sixth-place Neal Olsen (So., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) to take the Oles to an early lead in the MIAC track and field competition.

Ole Fastpitch Sweeps Cobbers
MAY 5, 2001 — The St. Olaf College fastpitch team swept the Concordia College Cobbers in a doubleheader in Moorhead on May 4. The Oles pulled ahead in the first inning with four runs and went on to win the game 7-2. In the second game, the Oles took the lead in the fourth inning and triumphed over the Cobbers 4-2. The Oles were led by Carrie Cooley (Jr., Villard, Minn.) who went 5-6 with two doubles and three singles. The Oles recived strong pitching performances from junior Grete Christenson (Springfield, Va.) and first-year Melissa Ohm (Elgin, Minn.), along with solid defense.

Norseman Band to perform Saturday, May 5, at St. Olaf
MAY 5, 2001 — St. Olaf College?s Norseman Band will perform its final concert of the year on Saturday, May 5, at the college.

MAY 3, 2001 — Rain and gloomy skies hovered over Mark Almli Field and threatened to keep St. Olaf from playing, but in the end, the Oles used quality pitching and timely hitting en route to their sweep over the St. John's Johnnies.

MAY 3, 2001 — St. Olaf College Prof. James M. May and University of Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom) lecturer Jakob Wisse have completed a new, annotated translation of Cicero?s On the Ideal Orator (De oratore) ? the first translation in 60 years of the Roman orator?s classic work, and the most comprehensive effort ever.

Mens Track and Field at Rolex Classic
MAY 3, 2001 — The St. Olaf men's track and field team traveled to Carleton Tuesday afternoon partly in hopes of adding to their list of qualifiers for the MIAC championships, but mainly to regain the Rolex Championship trophy from their cross-town rivals. Unfortunately, they fell victim to the dual meet's unique scoring system. Though no team score is kept, a random event is drawn from a hat at meet's end to decide the winner. The hammer throw proved decisive, as the Knights kept the coveted watch for a second straight year.

Fastpitch Splits Series with Auggies
MAY 3, 2001 — The St. Olaf College Women?s Fastpitch Softball team split a hard-fought doubleheader with the Augsburg College Auggies this afternoon. The Oles used a two-run first inning to last out the visiting Auggies in the first game, winning 2-1. The second game was another tight one as Augsburg triumphed 3-1.

MAY 2, 2001 — Eight exhibits by St. Olaf College senior art majors will be featured in the final of five shows in the annual Festival of Senior Work starting Sunday, May 6, in Steensland Art Museum.

MAY 1, 2001 — Street life in ancient Greece will be discussed in an illustrated talk by a guest lecturer at St. Olaf College on Thursday May 10.

Ole Fastpitch Takes Two from Royals
MAY 1, 2001 — The Oles opened the scoring in game one with a three run second inning. Andrea Hatleli (Sr., Austin, Minn.) picked up two RBI?s and the Oles took an early 3-0 lead. St. Olaf struck again in the fourth inning, picking up two more runs and taking a 5-0 lead.
