Course Overview:

This course focuses on Lighting and Sound as part of live performance.  The course includes information and project work in both design and technical production.  Details about process and workflow are integrated into the course as part of demonstrations, labs and class sessions.  Students create performance projects in both sound and lighting using the sound lab, light lab and the Haugen Theater in the Theater Building.   The course includes numerous class lab sessions with lighting and sound technology.  Students operate the sound and lighting technology to create and perform their project work. Students engage with the following as part of their project work:
Compter-Aided design and drafting (CADD) using Vectorworks to create sound system block drawings and performance light plots.
Digital Audio Recording and editing using Logic Pro, Q-lab, and digital routing to multi-channel playback systems.  Analog sound systems- mixers, effects processing.
Lighting Control system programming, including color choice, angle of light, and cueing.  Sound control programming using Q-lab.
Sound system setup, interconnection and troubleshooting, including block diagram work, connectors, and common cabling.
Lighting system setup.  Hanging, circuiting, focusing, color, patterns and intelligent light fixtures.  DMX  signal distribution and interconnectioninterconnection and
• Introduction of common lighting and sound equipment used in live performance as well as allied industries.

Attendance at live performance:
Students attend the live performance work on campus including theater productions, dance concerts, music concerts and Christmas Festival.  Class sessions including the designers and production staff from each event are scheduled to explore the processes, ideas, planning, materials and technology that contribute to each performance.
